Biography
Martin Kampmann was born on April 17, 1982 in the city of Aarhus in the Central Jutland region. At the age of eight, he began to engage in wrestling , then at the age of fourteen he entered karate and practiced this martial art for two years. Later he mastered Thai boxing and traditional boxing , performed in these disciplines at an amateur level. In 2000, became interested in grappling and soon decided to try himself in MMA [1] .
Career start
Before becoming a professional, Kampmann had nine fights at the amateur level, winning eight of them. He made his debut among professionals in February 2003, and in the local promotion he defeated his rival by technical knockout in the first round. Later he went to fight in England, Sweden and the capital Copenhagen. He suffered his first defeat in his career in October 2004, when he took part in the M-1 Global middleweight grand prix in St. Petersburg and lost to the Russian sambo wrestler Andrei Semenov at the semifinal stage - in the middle of the first round, the doctor decided that the Dane could not continue the fight .
In 2005, Kampmann won the King of the Cage tournament, after which he performed twice in the English promotion Cage Warriors , where he won and defended his middleweight title. Also during this period, he won the World Fighting Alliance tournament.
Ultimate Fighting Championship
With nine victories and only one defeat on the track record, in 2006 Kampmann attracted the attention of the largest American promotion Ultimate Fighting Championship . In the first four fights, he successfully passed his rivals, including a bonus for the best reception of the evening, but in September 2008 he lost by technical knockout to Nate Marquardt . After this defeat, he decided to go down to featherweight, and this decision paid off - two victories followed, in particular, by a separate decision of the judges, he defeated former WEC champion Carlos Condit .
In 2009, Kampmann was due to meet with Mike Swick , and it was assumed that the winner of this fight would become an official contender for the champion title, owned by Georges Saint-Pierre . Nevertheless, Suick was injured, and Paul Daly got into the rivals - since Daly was a newcomer to the organization, the battle lost the status of the contender. In the end, Kampmann lost by technical knockout in the first round. After two victories, he suffered two defeats by controversial judgments, first from Jake Shields , then from Diego Sanchez - in the second case, the fight was recognized as the best fight of the evening.
At the end of 2011, Martin Kampmann defeated Rick Story by a separate decision of the judges, in 2012, in a duel with Tiago Alvis, he received a bonus for the best reception of the evening, and after defeating Jake Ellenberger he received a bonus for the best knockout of the evening. At the Montreal tournament, Kampmann was knocked out by Joni Hendricks in 46 seconds. The last time he fought in the UFC octagon in August 2013, when in a rematch with Carlos Condit, was defeated by technical knockout. Despite the defeat, he received a bonus for the best fight of the evening [2] [3] [4] .
Retirement
At the beginning of 2014, Kampmann announced a decision to take a break in his professional career and stopped participating in battles. Later it became known that he works as a full-time coach in the Team Alpha Male team in Sacramento . In January 2016, the Dane confirmed that he had finally completed the career of a professional athlete and would never return to fights [5] [6] [7] .
Subsequently, he repeatedly participated in poker tournaments . Married, has two sons. He makes friends with such famous fighters as Randy Couture and Ray Sefo , who for some time played the role of his coaches [8] .
