Currently, TranslateWiki.net is one of the twenty largest wiki encyclopedias in the world by the number of pages [4] . About 16 thousand translators participate in the project [5] , more than 120 thousand pages from more than 30 projects [6 ] have been translated, including Mediawiki , OpenStreetMap , Mifos , Encyclopedia of Life and MantisBT .
Features
The project TranslateWiki.net is based on a wiki engine with the extension "Translate", which provides a low entry threshold for any Internet user [7] . The quality of translations is achieved by freeing translators from additional tasks not related to the translation itself.
Translations are immediately available to the translator and are synchronized seamlessly between the version control system and the translated wiki pages [8] without the intervention of the translator. In the case of Wikimedia Foundation's MediaWiki projects, localization updates reach sites in less than a day (such a system is sometimes called “continuous translation” [9] or “continuous localization”).
The translation editor provides various options for semi-automated translation , such as:
- message documentation, also known as “context”,
- Offers translation options from the corpus of texts and machine translation ,
- checking translations for common syntax errors,
- the status of the translation of messages [10] .
TranslateWiki.net is also a semantic Mediawiki , part of the semantic web [11] [11] [12] .
History
The TranslateWiki.net project was launched by Niklas Lakström ( Fin. Niklas Laxström ) [13] as a localization platform for MediaWiki for all languages around June 2006 (at the time the project was called Betawiki) [14] .
In addition to translations, the project provided an integrated development environment for MediaWiki (Nukawiki in 2005 [7] ), with an emphasis on improving the features of internationalization . [15]
At the end of 2007, the site was transferred to the current domain translatewiki.net and Sibrand Mazeland ( niederl. Siebrand Mazeland ) joined the site management.
In April 2008, the project supported over 100 languages for MediaWiki and 200 of its extensions, which made it one of the most translatable software projects in history, as well as the FreeCol game. After the project became an independent volunteer project, [16] [17] the project was recognized for contributing to the worldwide success of MediaWiki and Wikimedia Foundation projects, such as Wikipedia , available in more than 280 languages. [18]
In 2009, TranslateWiki was improved as part of the Google Summer of Code project. [19] In 2011, proofreading capabilities were presented. [20] In 2012, its translation memory engine was extended to all Wikimedia projects, through the use of the MediaWiki extension called the Tranlate Extension . [21]
In 2013, the translation platform underwent a major renovation as part of the Translate User eXperience project, or TUX, including changes in navigation, editor, translations, filters, search, color and style. [ten]
