Biography
Born in 1793 in the city of Walworth in Durham County in the family of a post office official. His cousin Amelia Opie (nΓ©e Alderson ) was the wife of the artist John Opie .
Already while studying at a school in Epping , Essex , Henry sent his engravings to The Gentleman's Magazine . In 1811, he entered the Royal Academy in London. Since 1814, he began to exhibit and became a regular exhibitor at the Academy, as well as the British Institution . During this period, the artistβs paintings were mostly on historical subjects. After his election in 1832 as a member of the Royal Academy, Briggs devoted his attention mainly to portraiture.
He died in London on January 18, 1844 from tuberculosis .
Jacob Bell, founder of the English Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain , was a cousin of Briggs and took painting lessons from Briggs as a young man. Among his students, Thomas Francis Dixie stands out.
Proceedings
The artist's works are in many museums around the world, including the Tate Gallery [1] , the British Institution , the National Maritime Museum , as well as in private collections.
