"Abyrvalg" - the first word spoken by the hero of the story of Mikhail Bulgakov " Heart of a Dog " Sharikov after his "revival" in human form. The word was also voiced in the film of the same name , shot by director Vladimir Bortko (1988).

Story
According to the story of the story, the professor Preobrazhensky transplants the testes and pituitary of a man (who died in a fight between a thief, a rowdy and an alcoholic) with a yard dog. After a transplant with a dog, unexpected changes (“humanization”) begin to occur - it takes on the appearance of a person and begins to speak. The first distinctly clear word recorded in the diary of Dr. Bormental (one of the heroes of the story) becomes precisely the word “Abyrvalg” [1] . Later, Professor Preobrazhensky “decrypts” this word as “glav fish” [2] .
The word itself comes from the right-to-left word “Glavryba” - the abbreviated name of the Main Directorate for Fisheries and Fisheries of the People's Commissariat of the RSFSR [3] . This was the first word uttered by Sharikov after a successful operation.
Abyr-abyr ... abyrwalg!
According to the “Dog Heart” plot , Sharikov, being a dog, knew how to read the names on the stores, near which homeless dogs usually lived in search of food. But he read the name of this store from right to left, as he always approached the store from the right, fearing a policeman. In the opinion of Dr. Bormental, the reason for reading from the end was “in the section of the dog’s optic nerves” .
Origins and Interpretation
According to M. N. Panova, Bulgakov thus ridiculed the addiction of Soviet officials to abbreviated names [4] . B. Га. Gasparov [5] considers “abyrvalg” as a biblical allusion:
The first word that Sharik uttered, “abyrvalg”, is the sign read Glavryba in the opposite direction. The reading of the Ball from right to left ironically hints at the Semitic letter; the very word fish is the early Christian symbol of Christ.
The literary critic AK Zholkovsky put forward another assumption about the origin of the word “abyrvalg” [6] : considering Sharikov’s speech in the context of a literary motive to learning the speech of an unreasonable creature, he compares it with the mermaid’s speech in the story of A. Averchenko “Mermaid”, where the mermaid senselessly repeats "Fish s ... give fish." Such training of Sharikov to reading is probably an allusion to the well-known poem by Mayakovsky (“And I studied the alphabet from signs, turning the pages of iron and tin”) [7] .
In culture
The word became winged [8] . In honor of him is called a pub in Perm [9] . Also this name was used to name several enterprises in different regions of Russia.
In 2011, there was a scandal around a fish dish of the same name, produced in Perm [10] . In the advertisement, another winged phrase from “Heart of a Dog” was used - “In line, sons of bitches, in line!” [11] In the same year, the Abyrvalga advertising campaign was awarded the first prize at the Silver Mercury annual marketing services contest nomination "Best Creative Solution Integrated Campaign" [12] .
