Election Rules
In accordance with the constitution of the Syrian Arab Republic, the Arab Socialist Revival Party (Ba'ath) is the leader of the Syrian state and society, and the Syrian president is also traditionally a member of this party. The National Progressive Front , a political coalition led by the Baath, appoints a candidate for president in the People’s Council. A presidential candidate must first obtain the support of two-thirds of the members of the People’s Council, and then his candidacy is put to a popular vote, after which at least 50% of the voters must get the support. Elections for the president of the SAR are held every seven years.
The victory of Bashar al-Assad
At the time of the May 2007 election, Bashar al-Assad, who was the 16th president of Syria, led the country for 7 years. The 2007 elections were held on an uncontested basis. In May, following the results of a popular vote, he, as in his first elections in 2000, again won a landslide victory. According to the Syrian Ministry of the Interior, he was supported by almost 97% of the country's population, and Bashar al-Assad became the head of Syria until 2014. SAR Interior Minister Bassam Abdel Majid noted that “this impressive result is evidence of Syria’s political maturity and the splendor of our democracy,” while his ministry defined Assad’s support for the people of Syria as enormous [2] .
