Dmitry V. Kanshin (1828 or 1829 - January 4, 1904 , St. Petersburg ) is a Russian public figure and nutritionist.

The eldest son of Vasily Semenovich Kanshin (1796–1868), the Ryazan landowner, who made a huge fortune. Due to the marriage of her sisters, she was related to several prominent Russian surnames (in particular, her sister Yulia married Arkady Telyakovsky ).
He graduated from the Imperial Alexander Lyceum , in 1849 received the title of titular adviser .
He served in various government agencies for the financial and economic part. In official duties I traveled abroad a lot.
In 1859, he became a member of the founding directors of the Russian Musical Society as the head of the “counting unit”, that is, the commercial director [1] ; Kanshin’s invitation was partly due to his attempts to create his own Musical Society, which would have become an unnecessary competitor to Anton Rubinstein’s project [2] . Rubinstein subsequently spoke skeptically about Kanshin and his activities: “Promising <l> to attract at least 100 members who could pay big money, however, he did not fulfill his promises and did not attract a single person with the funds. ...
In 1858–1862 regularly met abroad with Alexander Herzen , helped out with the London edition of Kolokol and contributed to its dissemination in Russia; in 1901, through V. G. Chertkov, published several of his letters to Herzen [4] .
In December 1862, as part of an investigation into the case of the leaders of the organization “ Earth and Freedom ”, Nikolai Chernyshevsky and Nikolai Serno-Solov'evich, he was involved in the investigation and trial on charges of assisting Herzen. On December 10, 1864, the Senate was released from court.
In the second half of the 1860s. engaged in the study of the economic efficiency of railways, published a report "Experience in the study of the economic value of railways" (1870), defending the advantages of horse traction before the steam.
In the 1870-1890s. dealt with the problems of nutrition. He was a member of the Russian Society for the Preservation of Public Health, patronized the canteen of the Culinary School in Moscow on Nikitsky Boulevard . He published the fundamental Encyclopedia of Nutrition (1885) in two volumes with a total volume of more than 800 pages, in which he carried out the idea of ​​the exceptional importance of proper nutrition for health [5] . Author of a number of other popular publications on healthy nutrition, including the books On the Question of Nutrition (1887) and Interests of the Stomach (1895). He wrote a number of articles on culinary topics for the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary [6] .
