Keysers

Keyserling , in the modern transcription Kaiserling ( German: Keyserlingk , Polish. Kajzerling ) is a count and baronial clan of the Courland nobility , included in the noble matrices of the Baltic provinces.

Comes from Westphalia , moved to Courland in the second half of the 15th century. Of the descendants of Hermann von Keyserling (d. 1618), three branches received the count title in Prussia in the 18th century, while German-Karl Keyserling acquired the count dignity in 1741 from the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.

At the end of the 19th century, the Keyserlings represented that part of the Ostseen nobility that most actively opposed the Russification of the Baltic states and spoke out for strengthening the ties of the Baltic Germans with Germany .

        • Alexander’s other nephew, Count Eduard von Keyserling (1855–1918), was a prominent Ostsee novelist and novelist, popular throughout the German-speaking world.
          • Count Archibald Keyserling (1882-1951), the nephew of the previous one, with the rank of admiral, was the first commander of the Navy of the Republic of Latvia (1924-1931).
          • Count German Alexander von Keyserling (1880-1946) - German philosopher and writer, second cousin of the previous one, grandson of Count Alexander; Married to granddaughter of Otto von Bismarck .
            • Count Arnold von Keyserling (1922-2005), son of the previous one, is also known as a thinker.

All of the individuals listed above are descended from Herman Ernst von Keyserling (1625–1680). Of the offspring of his uncle Johann von Keyserling (d. 1680), the following are most noteworthy:

  • Georg-Johann Keyserling (died 1711), the grandson of Johann, being the Prussian envoy to the court of Peter the Great , married his former mistress Anna Mons .
  • Johann-Heinrich Keyserling (died in 1734), the brother of the previous one, at the post of Chancellor of Courland, patronized the rise of Biron .
  • Herman-Christoph Keyserling (died in 1755), a cousin of the previous ones, moved to live in Prussia.
