Story
This episode reveals the town of Bikini-Bottom. Viewers are shown a young sea sponge, which is preparing to fulfill the dream of their whole life - to cook crabsburgers at the Krusty Krab underwater fast food restaurant, to the annoyance of the cashier at Squidward restaurant. SpongeBob gets nervous getting a job at Krusty Crab until his best friend Patrick Star convinces him. Squidward told Mr. Krabs that SpongeBob cannot work here and they decided to manipulate him, sending him on an impossible assignment to acquire a seemingly nonexistent "hydrodynamic blade with sawmills and a turbo-drive" [1] .
Soon after his departure, five buses containing crowds of hungry anchovies stop at Krusty Krab, an abundance of passengers vehemently demanding food. Unable to satisfy the hungry anchovies, Squidward and Mr. Krabs remain helpless with the unsatisfied crowd. Until SpongeBob returns from his assignment, following the request of Mr. Krabs and finding a shovel, which he uses in quickly pumping heaps of crabsburgers for anchovies and satisfying them with food. After the crowd dies down, SpongeBob is welcomed as an employee of Krusty Krab, much to Squidward's dismay. Patrick orders a crabsburger and SpongeBob threw a whole stream of crabsburgers in front of the startled Squidward on him [1] .
Production
The episode "Assistant Wanted" was written by the creator of the animated series Stephen Hillenberg, Derek Draymon and Tim Hill. Alan Smart was a director [1] . Initially, Stephen Hillenberg planned to produce this series in 1994, but began working on it in 1996 after the end of the animated series " New Life of Rocco " [2] .
Stephen's initial idea was for the scriptwriters to make a storyboard for a possible episode and broadcast it on Nickelodeon . One of the original ideas of the series was to make an episode with SpongeBob and Squidward on a road trip, inspired by the 1989 film, “ Highway Meetings ” [3] . However, Hillenberg rejected this idea and decided to use it in the Pizza Delivery series.
SpongeBob was originally called “SpongeBoy Boy” and the animated series was called “SpongeBoy Ahoy!” However, Nickelodeon’s legal department found that the name “SpongeBoy” is already used in the mop product. This was recognized after the scoring of the 7-minute pilot episode in 1997. After this discussion, Hillenberg decided that the word “sponge” should be in the character’s name so that the audience would not confuse him with the “cheese man”. Soon, Stephen gave him the name "SpongeBob." He chose “Square Pants” as his last name because of the square shape of the character and it was “a good ring to him.”
