Synthesis

Sodium hydromethylarsenate can be synthesized from chloromethane , arsenic (III) oxide , sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide [3] :

CH3Cl+As2O3+H2SOfour+NaOH⟶CHfourAsNaO3{\ displaystyle \ mathrm {CH_ {3} Cl + As_ {2} O_ {3} + H_ {2} SO_ {4} + NaOH \ longrightarrow CH_ {4} AsNaO_ {3}}}

It can also be obtained by methylation of sodium meta arsenite with dimethyl sulfate [3] :

NaAsO2+C2H6OfourS⟶CHfourAsNaO3{\ displaystyle \ mathrm {NaAsO_ {2} + C_ {2} H_ {6} O_ {4} S \ longrightarrow CH_ {4} AsNaO_ {3}}}

Usage

Sodium hydromethylarsenate is used as a defoliant in cotton growing, especially in Texas and Louisiana and as a herbicide on golf courses [4] .

Approval

In the European Union and Switzerland, this substance is prohibited for use as an active agent of plant protection products [5] .
