The Abrakiots, who were allies of the Spartans, sent reinforcements to help the army that had invaded Amphilochy earlier. Ambrakioti did not know that the first army was defeated, surrounded and dispersed by the allies of the Athenians, Amphilochian and Acarnan the day before. Ambrakioty, who did not expect the arrival of the Athenian army, settled down below two steep hills. Demosthenes , the Athenian commander, occupied a higher peak, gaining a strategic advantage. Before dawn, while the Ambrakiots were still sleeping, they were attacked and destroyed by the Athenians.
In general, the Ambrakiots lost about 1,000 people in two battles. Thucydides describes this catastrophe: “no other Hellenic city has experienced such a great misfortune in such a short time” [1] .
