Biography
Born in the middle of the 16th century . In 1596 he brought back to the homeland the squadron of Mendana , who had lost the commander. In 1606 he discovered the Islands of Friendship (Tonga) , then the Queen Charlotte archipelago, or Santa Cruz , headed south and reached the New Hebrides (islands of the Holy Spirit) , which he called "Australia de Espiritus Santu", that is, the "Southern Land of the Holy Spirit" proclaiming their property the crown of Spain . Convinced of the importance of the New Hebrides for Spain, Quiros went to Madrid to solicit the sending of colonists, but found only a complete lack of interest in bold enterprises.
He spent the next seven years in poverty, writing many memorials about his journey, and asked King Philip III for money for a new trip. He was sent to Peru with letters of recommendation, but the king was not going to finance a return expedition [1] .
He died in 1614 in Panama .
His report in French: “Copie de la requête présentée au roi d'Espagne par le capitaine P. de Quiros sur la cinquième partie du Monde, appelée terre Australe incogneue” (Paris, 1617 ).
