Alexander Vasilievich Kuchin (born May 31, 1949 , Baku ) is a chemical scientist, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2000), a prominent specialist in the field of organic and organometallic synthesis, winner of the A.N. Nesmeyanov Prize (1999).

Biography
Born May 31, 1949 in Baku .
In 1971, he graduated from the Faculty of Technology of the Ufa Petroleum Institute .
In 1976, he defended his thesis, theme: "Studies of the reaction of hydroalumination of unsaturated compounds."
In 1990 - defended his doctoral dissertation, topic: "Development of methods for producing organoaluminum compounds and their use in organic synthesis."
Since 1990 - Head of the Chemistry Department of the Komi Scientific Center, Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences .
Since 1995 - Director of the Institute of Chemistry, organized on the basis of the chemistry department of the Komi Scientific Center.
He is the head of the forest chemistry laboratory of the Institute of Chemistry, in 2000 he was elected a corresponding member of the RAS .
Scientific activity
Research interests in the areas of: organic synthesis, the production of biologically active substances, terpenoids, phenols, chlorophyll and its derivatives, isolation of components of plant materials, oxidation, reduction, physiologically active substances, organometallic synthesis, asymmetric synthesis, catalysis, wood chemistry.
The main scientific and technological achievements:
- Catalysts for the polymerization of oxiranes, oxetanes and phenol alkylation.
- Organometallic regulators of the rheological properties of conductive, resistive and dielectric pastes for the microelectronic industry.
- Sesquiterpene repellents to protect cattle from blood-sucking insects.
- Organomineral fertilizer based on waste products from the timber industry.
- Growth-promoting and protective products for crop production.
- Methods for purifying sulfate turpentine from organosulfur compounds to obtain valuable marketable products.
- Methods of processing coniferous wood greenery.
- Sorbents for medicine and technical purposes.
Community Activities
He made a significant contribution to the organization and formation of the Institute of Chemistry of the Komi Scientific Center, Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and is the creator of the patent service of the Institute.

Initiator of the annual competitions at the Institute: in February - a competition for the best fundamental and applied work over the past year and a competition for young scientists for the best research work or project (dedicated to the professional holiday "Day of the Chemist").
With his direct participation and leadership in Syktyvkar, three All-Russian meetings “Forest chemistry and organic synthesis” and five All-Russian conferences “Chemistry and technology of plant substances” were held (the cities of Syktyvkar, Kazan, Saratov, Ufa).
He conducts pedagogical work with graduate students at the University-Academic Educational and Scientific Center of the Federal Chemical Plant, and heads the Department of Organic Chemistry at SSU.
Under his leadership, 12 master's theses were defended.
Author and co-author of more than 300 scientific papers, including a monograph. He has 60 copyright certificates and 75 patents of the Russian Federation.
