Mi-2SME is the Ukrainian version of the modernization of the Soviet Mi-2 multi-purpose helicopter [1] , developed by Motor Sich .

History
In August 2011, V. A. Boguslaev , head of the board of directors of Motor Sich, said in an interview that Motor Sich had begun a project to produce upgraded Mi-2MSB helicopters equipped with a new, more powerful and economical engine [2] . The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine provided funding for the development work on the Korolok R&D program, since the modernized helicopter was supposed to be used as a training machine for training cadets of the Ukrainian Air Force military schools [3] .
Re-equipment of the first two Mi-2 helicopters was carried out at the Vinnitsa Aircraft Plant in 2011 (the cost of upgrading each Mi-2 amounted to almost 850 thousand US dollars ) [4] . In November 2012, one helicopter was presented in Kiev [5] .
In addition, on October 1, 2012, the company Motor Sich proposed to develop a light attack helicopter Mi-2MSB-2MO based on the Mi-2MSB. This modification should be equipped with two weapon farms to accommodate B8V20A rocket launchers or the UPK-23-250 universal cannon containers [6] .
In 2013, the possibility of remotorization of the modernized Mi-2MSB with AI-450M engines was announced [7] . On July 4, 2014, the first flight of the modernized Mi-2 helicopter with AI-450M engines performed its first flight [8] .
In addition to specialists from the Orizon-Navigation SE, LLC NPF MS Avia Grade LLC from Zaporozhye participated in modernization of the flight and navigation complex of the helicopter when installing the satellite GPS navigation station SN-4312U [9] .
On July 13, 2014, a representative of Motor Sich announced that the Mi-2MSB helicopters would be delivered to the Ukrainian armed forces [10] . On November 28, 2014 the first helicopter was handed over for testing to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine [11] (in total, until December 3, 2014 the helicopter completed 44 test flights [12] ). On December 6, 2014, at the Chuguev airfield [13], two upgraded Mi-2MSB helicopters were officially handed over to the Ukrainian armed forces [14] .
September 22, 2015 at the XII-th international arms exhibition held in Kiev " Zbroya bezpeka -2015 ”ESTA LTD LLC from Nikolaev (manufacturer of blades for wind power plants) introduced a composite rotor blade for the Mi-2 helicopter, which was proposed for the upgraded Mi-2 [15] .
In 2016, work on the modernization program was completed [3] .
On January 11, 2016, President of Ukraine P. A. Poroshenko declared 2016 “the year of the Ukrainian Air Force” and announced his intention to transfer additional new and modernized equipment to military aviation, in 2016, funds were allocated and work began on the modernization of helicopters 2 armed forces of Ukraine to the level of Mi-2MSB [16] .
On April 18, 2016, the Mi-2MSB with AI-250M-B engines climbed to a height of 7000 meters during a test flight [17] .
On June 2, 2016, at the KADEX-2016 arms exhibition, Motor Sich signed a licensing agreement with Kazakhstan Aviation Industry LLC on the transfer to the Kazakh side of technologies for the modernization of Mi-2 helicopters [18] .
December 26, 2016 the Mi-2MSB helicopter was officially adopted by the Ukrainian Air Force [1] .
In March 2017, the Adron NPF announced the development of a screen-exhaust device for the Mi-2MSB, which is designed to reduce temperature and disperse exhaust gas flows [19] .
On July 10, 2017, Motor Sich JSC was certified a comprehensive simulator of the Mi-2 helicopter with AI-450M engines, designed to train pilots [20] .
On August 10, 2017, it was announced that Motor Sich created a modification of Nadiya ” [21] (version with a passenger compartment for 7 passengers and a lifting ramp in the aft of the fuselage). Flight tests of a prototype helicopter are scheduled for September 2017, mass production - for 2018 [22] . The helicopter is planned to be certified as a civilian, but it is reported that it can also be used as a patrol or sanitary-medical [21] .
In October 2017, the Vinnitsa Aircraft Plant began work on the modernization of four Mi-2s in the Mi-2MSB [23] .
At the end of October 2017, an armed Mi-2MSB helicopter (equipped with a sight, a trigger mechanism and two removable beam holders with B8V8MSB units for 8 missiles) first made practical launches of 80-mm S-8 unguided air missiles on ground targets [24] [25] .
April 16, 2018 helicopter MSB-2 " Nadiya ”took to the sky from the heliport in Zaporozhye [26] .
On March 27, 2019, in the Chuguev area, during a training flight, the Mi-2MSB Air Force of Ukraine made an emergency landing. As a result, the helicopter received minor damage, crew members were not injured. According to preliminary data, the cause of the accident was the failure of the steering [27] .
Description
During the modernization of the Mi-2 to the level of Mi-2MSB, remotorization is carried out (during which the GTD-350 engines with a capacity of 350 hp are replaced with two new, more powerful turbojet engines AI-450 or AI-450M with a capacity of 460 hp of production Motor Sich) [2] , the installation of the engine required changes in the design of the power pack, fuel, oil and fire protection systems, engine cooling systems, as well as the installation of new configuration hoods made of composite materials [3] .
Changes were made to the on-board equipment: a control system [3] was re-equipped (a new control panel with liquid crystal monitors manufactured by Kiev NTK Electronpribor OJSC was installed) [2] , a GPS-navigation satellite station SN-4312U, an emergency beacon ARTEX C406-1НМ, an alarm were installed icing СО-121ВМ and flight data recording device BUR-4-1-07-02 [1] .
The cost of upgrading one Mi-2 to the level of Mi-2MSB in 2011 [2] —2014 amounted to 4.5 million US dollars [10] . The duration of the restoration and modernization of one helicopter is about a month [23] .
According to the manufacturer, the modernization allows to extend the helicopter’s flight resource by 8 - 16 years [2] .

In early 2017, it was announced that it was possible to equip the helicopter with screen-exhaust devices to reduce temperature and disperse exhaust gases, as well as a warning system for the crew about laser radiation [3] . In addition, in accordance with the tactical and technical specifications for the creation of a modernized version of Mi-2 for the State Emergencies Service of Ukraine [29], a search and rescue helicopter modification (equipped with a searchlight and a winch ) was created on the basis of the passenger and transport version of the Mi-2MSB [3] .
