Biography
Born in the city of Croydon in the eponymous borough of London . During the Second World War he was in Lewis , in 1948 he returned to Croydon. He studied at the Whitgift School at Cecil Thomas Prime . In 1952 he entered the University of Leicester , which he graduated in 1955, after which, under the leadership of Thomas Tyutin, he worked on a taxonomic revision of the genus Salicornia . In 1960, Ball received a Ph.D.
Since 1957, Ball worked at the University of Liverpool , taking part in the creation of the monograph Flora Europaea . In 1961 he visited Greece, in 1963 - Serbia, in 1967 - Almeria (south of Spain).
Since 1970, William Ball has been a professor at the University of Toronto . Since that time, he began to be interested in the sedge family flora in Ontario. He is the author and co-author of treatments for several genera of this family, as well as Salicornia and related genera in Flora of North America .
Ball - a member of the Botanical Society of the British Isles, the Canadian Botanical Association, the American Society of Plant Taxonomy.
