Maria Sherifovich ( Serb. Marija Sherifoviћ, Marija Šerifović ; born November 14, 1984 , Kragujevac ) is a Serbian singer, winner of the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Prayer” in Serbian .

Biography

Maria Sherifovic was born on November 14, 1984 in Kragujevac, Serbia. Her mother is the famous Serbian folk singer Veritsa Sherifovich . Maria’s father, Raiko Sherifovich, was a drummer musician with Turkish roots. More than one generation of the Sherifovich family was associated with music.

For the first time, Maria performed in public at the age of 12 with the song Whitney Houston I will Always Love You . Maria graduated from a music school in Kragujevac. After graduating from high school, lives in Belgrade .

Career

In 2003, Maria Sherifovich's debut album Naj, najbolja ( Serb. "The Best, The Best" ) was released, which marked the beginning of her musical career. The biggest hit of the album was the song Znaj da znam ( Serbian. “Know what I know” ), written by Darko Dimitrov. In the same year, Maria participated in the Budva festival with the song Darko Dimitrova Gorka čokolada ( Serbian. “Bitter Chocolate” ). In 2004, she took part in the same festival with the song Bol do ludila and won first place. The song was high on the charts.

In the summer of 2005, Maria released the single Agonija , which was a cover version of the song I believe it of the Greek super singer Despina Wandi. At Beovizija-2005, and then in the semi-final of the national pre-selection of Serbia and Montenegro for the Eurovision Song Contest - Evropesma, Maria performed the song Ponuda ( Serbian "Proposal" ), and took 18th place. In the same year, she was a favorite and won the Serbian Radio Festival with the song U nedelju ( Serb. “Sunday” ), written by Leontina Vukanovic. She also received an award for best vocals.

The second album of Maria Sherifovich - “Bez ljubavi” ( Serb. “Without Love” ) was released in 2006, and was very successful. In early 2007, a single was released under the name Bez tebe ( Serb. “Without You” ).

February 21, 2007 the first solo concert of Maria Sherifovich, which was attended by a four thousandth audience.

On March 8, 2007, she won the Beovizija 2007 contest with the song “Prayer” , gaining the most votes in a joint jury and television audience. And thus, she was qualified as the first representative of the newly independent Serbia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 in Helsinki , Finland . The song was also recorded in English, Finnish and Russian.

During the preliminary tour I visited Bosnia and Herzegovina , Croatia , Macedonia , Switzerland and Greece .

The Eurovision 2007 semifinal took place on May 10, and the final on May 12. In the semifinals, Serbia was at number 15. In the final, Sherifovich performed under the 17th number after Germany and in front of Ukraine and won first place in the competition. The backing vocalists were Beauty Queens .

On the return of Maria Sherifovich to Belgrade at the Nikola Tesla Airport, about 100 thousand people greeted her.

Personal life

Her father left the family before the birth of his daughter, and before that, he regularly beat his mother and got drunk. Mary has a half-brother Daniel Pavlovich , also a singer.

In 2013, Sherifovich admitted that she was a lesbian . [2]
