International Docking System Standard

International docking system in advanced configuration

International Standard Docking System , abbr. MSSS ( International Docking System Standard , abbreviated IDSS) is the international standard for the docking nodes of spacecraft. It was created by the Multilateral Coordinating Council of the International Space Station , under the auspices of partner organizations of the International Space Station ; NASA , Roscosmos , JAX , ESA and the Canadian Space Agency .

Version “A” of the ISSA document was originally developed in 2010 [1] . It provides technical instructions for all collaborating institutions so that they can create all their future docking systems compatible with each other, guided by this standard.

Design

The docking mechanism of the MCCS - androgynous (allowing to dock any node to any), uses the docking method of weak collision and allows the spacecraft to not only actively dock, but also be a passive berth. [2] . It supports both automatic and manned docking. In addition, it has the ability to pyrotechnic (explosive) undocking in special cases. The connected pairs of interfaces of the MCCS allow the transmission of electricity, data, commands, air and support telecommunications. In future implementations, they will also be able to transfer water, fuel, an oxidizing agent and support hydraulics. [3]

The passage for the crew and cargo has a diameter of 800 millimeters (31 ″). [four]

Implementations

  • NASA's Docking System is an American implementation of the ISSA. [five]
  • International Docking Adapter - to connect the older APAS-95 Docking System to the NASA Docking System.
  • “ International Passive Active Docking Mechanism ” - the implementation of the MSSS-compatible docking system from ESA.
