Biography

Born on October 3, 1898 in the city of Juzemberk. He graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the Naval School in 1916 as a radio telegraph engineer. He joined the Austro-Hungarian fleet (presumably, he served on the dreadnought Prinz Eugen). After the war he continued to serve in the navy of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. He led the Naval Academy of Dubrovnik and the merchant fleet of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Before World War II, he had the rank of captain of a battleship ( equivalent to the rank of colonel on land) and commanded the destroyer division.

On April 16, 1941, after the Zagreb destroyer was flooded , Captain Kern with the destroyers Durmitor and Kaymakchalan left the Bay of Kotor in the direction of Alexandria , where the Yugoslav Government was in exile , and transferred its destroyers to the British fleet . On August 10, 1943 , he was appointed Minister of Transport, Forestry and Mining in the Yugoslav government in London [1] , was removed from his post on October 12 due to the start of negotiations on the transfer of the fleet of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia to the hands of the red partisans in the person of two destroyers, one broken submarine and 10 torpedo boats boats. Negotiations were conducted on the island of Vis and broke due to the intervention of the British. At the suggestion of Vladimir Velebit Kern established contact with him in London and said that the British would still be ready to hand over the Yugoslav ships to the guerrillas, which would be disguised as merchant ships. However, negotiations failed after two ships were lost. Soon, Kern nevertheless sided with the partisans.

After the end of World War II, Ivan Kern offered his post to the post of commander of the fleet: the main candidate, Josip Czerny, was only the captain of the corvette (major) and was lower in rank than Kern. For his services in strengthening the partisan fleet and at the personal suggestion of Josip Broz Tito in 1945, Kern received the rank of rear admiral of the Yugoslav fleet and headed the Navy of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia. On December 22, 1945 he retired.

He died on June 26, 1991 in Ljubljana [2] . He was awarded the Yugoslav Order of the White Eagle .
