He was the youngest of the twelve children from the first marriage of the Austrian Count Johann Joseph von Thunnd Hohenstein and Countess Maria Christiana Hohenzollern-Gechingen . The family owned numerous wealth and real estate, several castles in the Czech Republic and Moravia .

In 1768 he became Canon Passau , in September 1771 he was ordained in Litomerice . From 1787 - canon of the Cathedral in Passau, in 1795 - confessor of the Cathedral of St. Stephen in the same place, from May 1796 - General Vicar , acting as auxiliary bishop .

After the death of his relative, Prince Bishop Johann Thomas Count von Tun und Hohenstein, in December 1796 he was elected his successor. Approved by the Pope on July 24, 1797

When in February 1803 the bishopric of Passau was secularized and deprived of secular power, part of the bishopric passed to the prince-elector of Bavaria, and the largest, eastern part - to the Grand Duke of Tuscany , who became elector of Salzburg . Leopold Leonard Raimund von Tun und Hohenstein did not accept change, entered into an argument with the Bavarian authorities, left Passau and never returned there again. The apostolic capital did not accept his resignation, so he formally remained Bishop of Passau until his death on October 22, 1826 ).

The last years of his life he spent in the family castle Tsybulka.

He was buried at the Malostransky cemetery in Prague.
