Rabad (Arabic - suburb , also Rabat ) - the outskirts, commercial and industrial suburbs in the medieval (VII-VIII centuries) cities of Central Asia and southern Kazakhstan , Iran , Afghanistan . In the classical three-part scheme of the medieval city ( citadel / shahristan / rabad), rabad adjoined the fortified part of the city - shahristan. Later, ramparts and moats were built around the rabad; sometimes rabad is called the common city wall of the suburbs and shahristan. In the 9th-12th centuries, rabad was the center of the economic and political life of the medieval Muslim city.
