Soldier Protection System (SPS) is an American program for developing a promising individual combat equipment system [1] , launched in 2013 [2] .
General Description
The main purpose of the program was to optimize the protection of a soldier from ballistic striking elements (bullets, fragments) and explosions [3] [4] , in addition to it the following goals were set:
- 5-15% reduction in the total weight of soldier’s equipment
- improving the efficiency of the equipment while maintaining compatibility with previous models in service,
- ensuring modularity of equipment and adaptability for various types of combat missions [1] .
Shortly after the start of the program, some of the key areas of development fell under budget sequestration [5] [6] . In the future, problems were identified with the implementation of a number of design requirements for the final product, the most important of which was to take into account the peculiarities of female anatomy when designing individual fighter armor. According to independent observers, failure to comply with this paragraph seems discouraging in light of the fact that women make up up to 14% of the personnel of the US army (according to fiscal year 2014) [2] .
Equipment Composition
It includes torso protection systems ( Vital Torso Protection ), heads with integrated hearing protection devices ( Integrated Head Protection System ), a sensor complex ( Integrated Soldier Sensor System ) with functions for monitoring heart rate, body temperature , etc. [4] The equipment also includes elbow pieces, knee pads, protective gloves, ballistic plates and systems for their placement, a combat helmet covering the occipital part of the head, etc. [1]
