Velebit Caves

Velebit caves ( Velebit caves ) - a system of deep caves with some of the world's deepest natural mines in the Velebit mountains of Croatia .

Lukina Pit is a cave with a depth of 1431 meters, the deepest cave in Croatia, the 14th deepest cave in the world and the deepest cave in Southeastern Europe [1] . At its foot, there are several ponds and streams, including one in which the largest known colony of underground leeches Erpobdella mestrovi , which, as it was found, are representatives of a new species, genus and family [1] . Other species that were found in the cave include land snails Zospeum tholussum [2] . The Lukina Pit, as well as the Slovak Pit, Velebit and Medusa are located in the National Velebit National Park.

Other noteworthy caves include the Slovak Pit ( Slovak pits ; 1320 m deep), Velebita (1026 m deep with an underground elevation of 513 meters) and Medusa (679 m deep).
