Biography
In 1851, as commander in chief of the Brazilian army, he was very successful against the Argentine dictator Rosas . In 1857 and 1861–62 he was the Minister of War and the head of the cabinet; in 1867, in the war with Paraguay, he was entrusted with the main command over the combined forces of Brazil , Argentina and Uruguay . In 1869, Caxias occupied the capital of Paraguay, Asuncion , but after that, under the pretext of illness, he had to transfer the main authorities to Count d'E , the son-in-law of the Brazilian emperor. In 1875–78 he was again the Minister of War and the head of the cabinet.
