According to legend, Mara was born in the province of Lasta . Came from the people of Agau . Initially, he commanded the troops of the last king of the Axumite kingdom, Dil Naoda . Later, he was married to Masob Wark, daughter of the king of the Axumite kingdom, Dil Naoda . After that, he actually removed his predecessor, his father-in-law, and founded his own dynasty [1] . Other sources believe that Dil Naoda was removed from power by the Queen of Ethiopian Jews Judit , the cousin of Tekle-Haimanot, after whom he inherited the empire [2] .
There are various versions regarding the time of accession to the throne: some sources believe that the Zagwe dynasty ruled for 333 years, others - 133 years. Thus, if we count from the year 1270 the end of the dynasty’s reign, the year of the beginning of the reign of Mary Tekle-Haimanot can be considered either 937 or 1137 [2] .
The size of the kingdom was much smaller than at the beginning of the reign of the Solomon dynasty . The empire of those times included the areas of Last , Vog , Tigray , as well as northern Begemdir .
