History

1950s

The Magadan Book Publishing House was created on July 21, 1954 on the basis of the departmental publishing house Dalstroy " Soviet Kolyma " in connection with the formation in December 1953 of the Magadan Region [1] . The first years of the publishing house were devoted to the transition from the format of departmental to the state book publishing house of regional subordination, the development of the main areas of activity, the definition of topics, the formation of the circle of authors [2] [3] [4] .

The main areas of work were determined by the publication of fiction, socio-political literature, literature on the history of the development of the Far North and the culture of the peoples of the North; production and technical literature on economics, industry and agriculture of the Magadan region [5] .

Much attention was paid to the publication of works on the life of the north-eastern regions of the country, works of local authors. In 1955, a regional literary association was created at the publishing house, on the basis of which the Magadan regional branch of the Union of Writers of the RSFSR was formed in 1960 [6] [7] .

Since 1956, the Magadan Book Publishing House began publishing literature in the languages of the indigenous peoples of the North . Separate editorial offices were created in the structure of the publishing house - Chukchi, Even, Eskimo. To transmit specific sounds in these languages, the publisher ordered special characters and letters. The Chukotka editorship was the first to be formed, the poet Viktor Keulkut became its first editor, attracting Yu. S. Rytkheu , A. A. Kymytval , and V. V. Leontiev to work as translators [8] .

Since the second half of the 1950s, translations into the Chukchi language of Russian classical and Soviet fiction ( L. N. Tolstoy , I. S. Turgenev , A. P. Chekhov , M. A. Sholokhov ) and books for children ( A S. Pushkin , A. N. Tolstoy , V. V. Mayakovsky , S. Ya. Marshak , L. Kassil ) [9] [10] .

An important place was occupied by the publication of collections of folklore of the peoples of the North - the Chukchi , Evens , Eskimos , Kereks (over 20 collections were published) [11] [2] .

In the 1950s and 1960s, books were published on the subject of national fishing ( hunting , reindeer husbandry , agriculture, fur production), health education brochures in the Chukchi language (protecting the health of children taking into account the specifics of the Far North, etc.) [12] [ ten]

In the 1950s and 1970s, the publishing house produced about three dozen book series . Practical manuals in various fields of production and agriculture were published in the series “50 workers' professions”, “Experience of innovators for all workers”, “Scientists of the North - for agriculture”, etc. A number of series represented prominent people and leading enterprises of the region - “The best people of Magadan areas ”,“ Innovators of production ”, etc. [13]

Several series were devoted to the history of the development of Siberia, the Far East and Chukotka - “Pioneers”, “Far Eastern Historical Library” (inter-publishing, together with Khabarovsk and Far Eastern publishing houses), “Remember their names”, “Gold in Ice”. The geography and nature of the region were devoted to the series "The North Around Us", "The Big Fate of Small Peoples", etc. [14]

Literary and artistic works were published in the series “Northern Prose”, “The Library of Magadan Prose”, “The Library of Magadan Poetry”, and the literary and artistic almanac “In the Far North” [15] [2] [16] was also published.

According to the “Northern Encyclopedia”, “in the best years”, the publishing house published annually about 100 titles of books with a total circulation of about 1 million copies [2] .

1980s-2000s

The 1980s in the activities of the Magadan Book Publishing House, researchers in the history of book publishing in the Far East call the heyday of publishing literature in national languages [17] . In January 1982, the publishing house formed the editorial board of the literature of the peoples of the North , in the second half of the 1980s, the total volume of books in national languages increased by 20 percent [16] . Publishing house address for 1987: 685000, Magadan, Proletarskaya St., 15 [18] .

The publishing house participated in the international Leipzig book fair . In 1988, she received 1st degree diplomas at the XXVIII All-Russian Book Art Contest (for the photo albums “The Shore of Two Oceans” and “The New Life of Ancient Chukotka Legends”) [2] [19] [20] . It was noted "the skillful combination of the texts of the legends of Chukotka with their visual display, performed by the technique of bone engraving , supplemented by original portraits of storytellers" [20] .

In 1979-1990 The publishing performance of the Magadan Book Publishing House was as follows:

Since July 19, 1994, after the liquidation of the press and mass media administration of the administration of the Magadan Region, the name of the publishing house was changed, it became known as the state-owned enterprise “Magadan Regional Book Publishing House” [29] .

Since the early 1990s, due to changes in the socio-economic situation, the publication of books in the languages of the indigenous peoples of the North has ceased [30] . Due to financial difficulties, the total number of books published has also declined. On November 28, 2002, the publishing house ceased to exist [29] . One of the latest publications was the three-volume “Favorites” by O. M. Kuvaev and the martyrology of the executed “Ships will come for us” [5] .

According to S. A. Skleinis, a researcher of the history of book publishing in the Far East:

With the liquidation of the Magadan Regional Book Publishing House, a large socially significant sector of our spiritual life has been lost, and a high culture of working with books has been developed over decades [31] .
