General characteristics
The power source of the system is the Volga River , on the bank of which there are two water intakes for machine water lift - Raygorodsky and Ushakovsky. The first is located near the village of Raygorod of the Volgograd Region , the second is near the village of Ushakovka of the Astrakhan Region [1]
Water supply is carried out through the R-1 channels (length - 114.6 km), the P-3 (118.8 km (taking into account the BP-1 channel) and the Connecting Channel (9.7 km). The channels are made in the earthen channel, built in 1963-65 [1] .
Soils - light chestnut and brown semi-desert in combination with saline . Soil-reclamation and engineering-hydrogeological conditions are characterized as complex and difficult. The system is operated mainly as rice . Since the channels through which water is supplied, pass in the earthen channel through the territory with a high content of water-soluble salts in the soil profile, the Volga water (as it is transported) deteriorates in all respects. From sulphate-hydrocarbonate-calcium it goes into the chloride-sulphate-sodium-calcium type, since the amount of chlorine already in the on-farm irrigators approaches 15% of the total amount of ions, and the mineralization increases to 0.7 ... 1 g / l and corresponds to Class II quality [2] .
