Exposition

The museum's collection consists mainly of exhibits and models that illuminate the history of Austrian technological development. [5] [6] The complex includes functioning models from areas such as rail transport, shipbuilding, aviation and industry. [1] [3] TMW also houses one of the largest collections of historical musical instruments in Austria. The museum has a special library. [7]

History

In 1908, in connection with the 60th anniversary of the accession to the Austrian throne by Franz Joseph I , it was decided to build a museum of industrial technology and crafts in Vienna. The initiators of the idea were Wilhelm Exner , impressed by the 1873 World's Fair , and the Vienna Electrotechnical Union. The project was supported by industrialists Arthur Krupp and Johann Kremenetsky, creating a special organizing committee to raise funds for the construction of the museum, as well as entrepreneur Bernhard Wetzler and the Rothschilds house . In the same year, the National Technical Museum in Prague was opened.
