Johann Heinrich Füssli , or Henry Füssli ( German: Johann Heinrich Füssli , February 7, 1741 , Zurich - April 16, 1825 , London ) - Swiss and English painter , graphic artist, historian and art theorist, author of the famous series of paintings on the theme of a nightmare . Art historians are regarded as the forerunner of Victorian fairytale painting .

Biography
Fussley was born in Zurich. He was the second son of eighteen children. His father was Johann Caspar Füssley , an artist of portraits and landscapes. He served as a pastor, then studied painting in Berlin . In 1761 he left the country, traveled to Germany, and then, in 1765, visited England. He met Sir Joshua Reynolds , to whom he showed his drawings. Following the advice of Reynolds , he decided to devote himself completely to art. In 1770 he went to Italy, where he remained until 1778. He was friends with William Blake . At the beginning of 1779 he returned to Great Britain, on his way to Zurich. In 1788, Fussley married Sophia Rawlins, and he soon became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts . In 1799 he was appointed professor of painting at the Academy.
Creativity
He translated into English Winkelmann 's treatise "Reflections on the Painting and Sculpture of the Greeks", anonymously published the book "Notes on the Works and Actions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau " ( 1767 ). With a definite interest in classical antiquity and a craving for classicism, Shakespeare , Blake illustrated. In his paintings (“Nightmare”, 1781 ; “Sleeping and the Furies,” 1821 ), one can notice a fondness for gloomy science fiction plots borrowed from literature , folklore and mythology , a grotesque depiction of states of fear and madness , supernatural beings ( demons , witches , ghosts )
The Fuseli is considered one of the main innovators of painting at the turn of the 18th - 19th centuries , and his work, along with the work of William Blake, is an early manifestation of romanticism in English art.
In 1791 he created the painting “The Apotheosis of Penelope Boothby” , where he depicted, at the request of the father of the deceased six-year-old girl, in her allegorical form, her death and a meeting with an angel who would carry her to the heavenly kingdom.

Interesting Facts
- In Freud's reception room hung a reproduction of Fuseli's painting “A Nightmare”.
- According to Horace Walpole , Fuseli was "amazingly insane, insane as never before, insane as a whole and completely."
