Biography

Born in a poor family. After graduating from elementary school, he worked as a student of a watchmaker. He graduated from evening school. In 1923-1931 he studied philosophy and law at the University of Tartu . I didn’t finish my studies.

Engaged in literary work. In 1929-1930 he was the editor of the literary journal Kirjanduslik Orbiit . In 1938-1941 he worked as a playwright at the Estonian Drama Theater in Tallinn.

Several times he was elected Chairman of the Board of the Union of Writers of Estonia.

Athlete of Estonia. 1927 Estonian student games champion in javelin throwing. In 1928, the Estonian Championship set a personal record of 59.07 m, in 1925 and 1929 he won silver, in 1926 - bronze. He participated in the football competitions of the country.

In 1941 participated in the defense of Tallinn . He was arrested by the invaders and in 1941-1942 was in Tallinn prison Keskvangla. He came out of a fascist prison with poor health.

Creativity

It was published since 1921. In the collections of poems “Confusion” (1928), “From Peypsy to the Sea” (1930), “Down with Calm!” (1932), “Two Camps” (1933), he created realistic pictures of the life and struggle of Estonian workers, and criticized the bourgeois system. The poems “Sea and Forest” (1937-1938), “On Fire and Ashes” (1938), “West and East” (1939), “Bread and Water” (1940) and “Tartu and Tallinn achieved high skill in an unfinished cycle.
