History
The first section of the current Sekisho line between Oivake and Yubari was opened by the Hokkaido Coal Railway (北海道 炭 砿 鉄 道Hokkaido: Tanko: Tetsudo :) on November 1, 1892, for the export of coal from mines in the Yubari area. In 1906, along with the Muroran line, the branch was nationalized, in 1909 it was called the Yubari line (夕 張 線yu: bari sen ).
In 1912-1919, the second track was laid on the line, but in 1932 it was dismantled. The lower structure of the second path can still be seen along the line.
The connection between the eastern parts of the island and Sapporo remained a big problem. To solve this problem, a central section of the current Sekisho line was built in the 1970s. Traffic in the Sin-Yubari-Kami-Otiai and Minami-Chitose-Oivake sections was opened on October 1, 1981. Momidziyama station was closed, a new Sin-Yubari station was built next to it.
After the opening of the central section, the line received a modern name. The section of the old line between Sin Yubari and Yubari became a branch of the highway.
In 1985, the Yubari station was moved 1300 m south of the old place. In 1990, it was again moved, the line shortened another 800 m.
Closed Branches
- Momidziyama - Kaede (1907), Kaede - Noborikawa (1916); 7.6 km Closed July 1, 1981.
The following private railways also adjoined the line:
- Numanosawa - Hokutan-Mayati mine (1913); 4.4 km. Closed October 13, 1987.
- Mitsubishi-Yubari Line: Shimizusawa-Minami-Oyubari (1911-1987), 7.6 km; Minami-Oyubari - Oyubaritanzan (1929-1973), 9.6 km.
- Yubari-Tetsudo: Yubari-Kuriyama (1926), 30.2 km; Kuriyama - Nopporo (1930), 23 km. Closed April 1, 1975.
Closing Plans
In 2016, the Hokkaido Railway Company reported an expected record loss of ¥ 44 billion. [1] To reduce costs, it is planned to rationalize (close or increase operating subsidies) almost half of the company's lines by 2020. According to this plan, the branch of the Sekisho Yubari-Shin-Yubari line will be closed. [2]
Line Description
The line runs through sparsely populated areas, so local trains are available only on the Minami-Chitose-Yubari section, with a frequency of 5 pairs per day (2016). Also run fast trains Super Ozora (Sapporo - Kushiro, 6 pairs per day) and Super Tokachi (Sapporo - Obihiro, 5 pairs). [3]
