Biography
Emanuel Philibert was born in Turin on April 16, 1588. He was the third son of Charles Emanuel I, the Duke of Savoy and the Infanta Catalina Michaela of Spain [1] .
It was intended by parents for church service. In adolescence, the prince joined the Knightly Order of Hospitallers . He later preferred a military career to church service. In 1603, the prince, together with his older brothers - Philip Emanuel and Victor Amadeus , went to Madrid, where he completed his education. After the death of Philip Emanuel, in 1606, Emanuel Philibert and Victor Amadeus, who became the Crown Prince, returned to the Duchy of Savoy.
In 1610, Emanuel Philibert again arrived in Madrid and enlisted in the army of Philip III , King of Spain, who awarded him the title of Grand Admiral of Spain. Under the next monarch, Philip IV , king of Spain in 1622, he was appointed vice-king of Sicily. His reign lasted until 1624, when, at the age of 36, he died during a plague. He was buried in the Royal Tomb at the Escorial Monastery near Madrid [2] .
