The small ants are black or brown in color (the length of the workers is about 5 mm), externally similar to Pogonomyrmex and Myrmic ( Myrmica ). Monomorphic, the length of the head of workers from 0.97 to 1.32 mm, width HW from 0.81 to 1.16 mm, scape length SL antennae 0.78 mm to 1.00 mm. They have a convex clypeus , an underdeveloped psammophor , a smooth top of the petiole and a postpetiole, a palp formula of 5.4. Antennae of workers and females 12-segmented with 4-segmented mace (13 in males and without mace). Mandibles with 6 teeth. The stalk between the breast and the abdomen consists of two segments: the petiolus and the postpetiolus (the latter is clearly separated from the abdomen), the sting is developed, the pupae are bare (without cocoon). Close species of Patagonomyrmex laevigatus (Santschi, 1921) and Patagonomyrmex odoratus (Kusnezov, 1949) are characterized by smooth pronotum and mesonotum and coloring [1] .
Systematics
The species was described in 1870 by the Austrian myrmecologist Gustav Mayr under the original name Pogonomyrmex angustus Mayr, 1870 . Previously included in the genera Pogonomyrmex (from the former species group angustus -group) and Ephebomyrmex . In 2016, the genus Patagonomyrmex [1] [2] [3] [4] was selected.
