Mahmoud al-Gohari ( Arabic: الجوهرى , February 20, 1938 , Cairo ) - September 3, 2012 , Amman [1] ) - Egyptian football player , played as a striker . At the end of his career, he became one of the leading coaches in Africa . It is considered one of the best footballers and coaches of the Egyptians of all time [2] .

Mahmoud al-Gohari is one of two people, along with Nigerian Stephen Keshi , who won the Africa Cup both as a player and as a coach.

Biography
Playing as part of the Al-Ahly club, he was involved in the games of the Egypt national team , which won the 1959 African Cup of Nations (in which he became the top scorer of the tournament) [2] . In the first round of the group stage, he scored a hat-trick against Ethiopia .
In 1961, he completed his playing career due to injury. After that, he became an assistant coach at Al-Ahli’s home club, then he took up the position of coach at the Saudi club Al-Ittihad , then he headed Al-Ahli . After the club’s victory in the 1987 CAF Champions League , he led the Egyptian national team , which, after a 56-year hiatus, took him to the final stage of the 1990 World Cup [2] .
Later, having returned to club work together with the Zamalek club, he again achieved victory in the CAF Champions League [2] . In 1997, he returned to work with the Egyptian national team and led the national team to victory in the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations , becoming the first person to win this tournament as a player, then as a coach [2] .
In 2002, he became the head coach of the Jordanian national team, which he led to the final stage of the 2004 Asian Cup [2] .
