Medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase of fatty acids (also MCAD , abbreviated from English Medium-chain ac yl- C oA d ehydrogenase , EC 1.3.8.7 ) is one of the mitochondrial enzymes of the acyl-CoA dehydrogenase group, class oxidoreductases . The systematic name of the enzyme is electron-transporting flavoprotein-dependent 2,3-oxidoreductase [1] . This enzyme is involved in the process of β-oxidation of fatty acids. The gene encoding this enzyme, ACADM, is located on the 1st human chromosome .

It catalyzes the elimination (cleavage) reaction of protons from a substrate - acyl-CoA fatty acids with an average hydrocarbon chain length (from C8 to C14) to the electron-transporting flavoprotein ( FAD ), which serves as a prosthetic group :
Medium Hydrocarbon Chain Acyl-CoA Fatty Acid + FAD trans-2,3-dehydroxyacyl-CoA fatty acid with an average hydrocarbon chain length + FADH 2
