On the History of the Religious Church Press in Manitoba

The first issue of the Winnipeg newspaper Tread was published on February 27, 1959. Until that time, Ukrainians who had been living in Canada since 1891 did not have their own print media: they were satisfied with Ukrainian-language newspapers either from the USA or from Galicia, which they wrote out in Canada.

In Canada, the first Ukrainian Catholic magazine “Canada Rusyn” was founded by the efforts of the oo. Vasilian and the Redemptorists in the publishing house of the Latin Archdiocese: appeared in Winnipeg on May 27, 1911 - and subsequently, with the efforts and under the editorship of Bishop Nikiti Budka, he held out until 1918. Already with the new name “Canadian Ukrainian”, as the official organ of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada, the magazine existed until 1932, and as a result of the economic depression it ceased to exist. Already in 1959, due to the efforts of Metropolitan Maxim Germaniuk, the Ukrainian religious and church press of the UGCC in Manitoba resumed again.
