Prerequisites for the creation of the duchy of Gandia
The title of duke of Gandia comes from the lord of Gandia, created in 1323 by the King of Aragon Jaime II for his son Pedro de Aragon and Anjou (1305-1380). In 1399, King Martin of Aragon (1356-1410) elevated Senoria Gandia to the rank of duchy. After the death of Pedro de Aragon and Anjou, he was succeeded by his eldest son, Alfonso de Aragon and Veyoh the Elder (1332-1412), who also bore the titles of Count Ribagorsa (from 1361), Marquis of Vilhenas (from 1369 ), Count of Dénia and Baron Polop .
His eldest son and successor, Alphonse de Aragon and Jimenez the Younger (c. 1358–1422), built the ducal palace in Gandia, the monastery of San Jeronimo de Cotalba, and reformed his colleague Santa Maria in Gandia. Poets Mark Auzias, Juanot Marturel and Joan Rois de Corella lived in Gandia at his court.
In 1425, after the death of the childless Alphonse, 3rd Duke of Gandia, the ducal title passed to Hugo de Cardon and Gandia (1405-1470), the lord de Guadalest , the grandson of Alfonso's maternal line, the 1st duke of Gandia. He was the son of Count Cardona Juan Ramon Folk and de Cardona (1375-1441) and Juana de Gandia. In 1433, the ducal title was transferred to the Aragon Infanta Juan (1398-1479), who in 1439 granted him to his son, Prince Karl Viansky (1421-1461). In 1461, after the death of Charles of Vian, the duchy of Gandia was ceded to the Aragonese crown.
Borja Family
In 1483, the Duchy of Gandia purchased Cardinal Rodrigo de Borja (future Pope Alexander VI) from the King of Aragon Ferdinand the Catholic for his eldest son Pedro Luis de Borja (c. 1458-1888). After the death of Pedro Luis de Borja in 1488, his half-brother, Giovanni Borja, 2nd Duke of Gandia (1474-1497), who in September 1483 married his brother's bride, Maria Enriquez de Luna, to the cousin of King Aragon Ferdinand, inherited the ducal title.
