Waldo County is a county in Maine , USA . The capital is Belfast . According to the 2010 census, 38,786 people lived in the district. The area is 2209 km², of which 1891 km² is land and 319 km² is water. The population density is 20.5 people / km². The district was created in 1827. There are 26 cities in the district.

Geographical position
Waldo is located in southern Maine on the western shore of Penobscot Bay . 14.0% of the district is occupied by water bodies. Waldo includes the islands of Islesboro , Sears and Warren.
Waldo borders the districts of Penobscot (northeast), Hancock (east), Somerset (northwest), Kennebeck (west), Lincoln (southwest), Knox (south).
History
Waldo County was part of York County until 1760, then became part of the new Lincoln County. Hancock County was created in 1789, including Waldo Territory. February 7, 1827 from Hancock was allocated the territory of the new district, which was named after General Samuel Waldo [1] .
Population
In 2010, 38,786 people lived in the okrug (of which 49.0% were men and 51.0% were women), there were 16,431 households and 10,627 families. Racial composition : white - 97.1%, African - Americans - 0.4%, Native Americans - 0.4%, Asians - 0.4, and representatives of two or more races - 1.4%. According to the 2014 census, 16,527 people lived in the district, of which 10.5% were of German origin, 21.21% were of English origin, 16.8% were of Irish origin, 5.3% were Italian [2] .
The population of the district by age range was as follows: 21.0% - residents under 18 years of age, 62.8% - from 18 to 65 years old and 16.2% - aged 65 years and older. The average age of the population is 44.1 years. For every 100 women in the district, 96.1 men were accounted for, while for 100 adult women, there were already 93.4 men of comparable age [2] .
Of 16,431 households, 50.0% were cohabiting couples (16.2% with children under the age of 18), women lived without husbands in 9.9% of families, men lived without wives in 4.7% of families, 35 3% did not have a family. On average, 2.33 people conduct households, and the average family size is 2.81 people [2] .
In 2014, out of 32,006 able-bodied residents over 16 years old, 18,086 people worked. At the same time, men had a median income of $ 41,527 a year, compared to $ 32,780 of the average annual income for women. In 2014, the median income for a family was estimated at $ 53,698, for a household - at $ 43,484. The per capita income is $ 23,729. 11.6% of the total number of families in Waldo and 16.7% of the total population were below the poverty line at the time of the census [2] .
