The title comes from the name of the Italian commune of Bivona in the province of Agrigento in the Sicily region.

For three generations, the title of the Duke de Bivon belonged to the houses of Montalto and Villafranca, and in the 18th century passed to the house of Medina Sidonia. The 16th Duke of Medina Sidonia passed the ducal title to his younger brother, José María Alvarez de Toledo and Palafox, who was recognized by the Spanish Queen Isabella II as the 13th Duke of Beavon on July 7, 1865.
