Story

Barton George Dawes lives in a small American town and slowly goes crazy. He cannot recover from the death of his only son. He infuriates the construction of a motorway in the middle of the city. First, the laundry room where Dawes worked was demolished. He only had to find a new building for the laundry, but he did not, because he believed that if he found a new building, he would submit to the road. Then his wife leaves Dawes, because he did not buy a new house, while the old one will also be demolished due to the construction of the highway.

All these days, Daws drives on this very freeway - in protest against its construction (once he even set fire to construction equipment). And in the evenings he sat staring at the TV, having previously mixed Seven-Up with Southern Comfort. One day he meets a fellow traveler - Olivia. She was heading to Las Vegas and voted on the highway. Daws picked her up and took her to his home. After spending the night with her, Dawes drove her to the place where Olivia could travel further. Saying goodbye to him, Olivia gave him a pill of mescaline . This pill Dawes took when he was invited to celebrate the New Year , and "flew away."

In the end, hatred of the road brings him to the point that he decides to blow up his house and himself along with him.
