Sports career

He joined Doncaster Rovers from the amateur team Rossington. For three seasons, he scored 21 goals in 66 games of the third division of the championship of England.

His game attracted the attention of the management of the club " Manchester United ", which at that time played in the second English division. As part of the "red" debuted March 25, 1932 against the club " Charlton Athletic ." The match at Old Trafford ended in a victory for the guests (0: 2). The next day, he took part in the game against Oldham Athletic (5: 2 victory).

About further playing career little is known. In March 1933, he joined Chesterfield . Four seasons played for the team at the third division, "Torquay United" . The last two seasons spent in the "Crystal Palace" .

After World War II, he began working as a coach. The first club was Heracles from the Dutch city of Almelo . One season worked as a physical training coach in the Netherlands national team . In a similar position was in the Italian team at the Olympic Games in London.

In 1948, he entered the coaching headquarters of Torino , the then leader of Italian football. Under the leadership of Leslie Leesley and Ernest Erbstein , the team was leading in the 1948/49 season.

In the spring of 1949, the leadership of the Turin club accepted an invitation from the Portuguese grand, Benfica , to take part in a friendly game in honor of one of the biggest stars of the Lisbon club, Francisco Ferreira. The game took place on May 3, 1949 in Lisbon and ended in the defeat of the Italian guests with a score of 3: 4. The next day, the Torino team, club workers and journalists flew home on a flight Lisbon - Barcelona - Turin .

Near Savona, the plane began to decline under difficult weather conditions. At about 5:03 pm, he made a turn for landing and soon collided with a stone fence of the Basilica of Superga on the top of the mountain of the same name, towering over the outskirts of Turin. As a result of the crash, all four crew members and 27 passengers died on the spot.

At the time of the death of the main part of “Torino”, until the end of the season in Serie A there were four rounds left and the team was leading the championship race. In the last rounds, the honor of the club was defended by youth team players. All rivals in these matches ( “Genoa” , “Palermo” , “Sampdoria” and “Fiorentina” ), out of respect for the lost champions, also put up their teams in the field. The youth team "Torino" won in all the latest games of the season, thus winning the posthumous champion title for their older comrades [1] .
