Vendian department

“The Vendian Section ” (or “The Wend Division”; German. Wendenabteilung , from Wenden is one of the German names for the Ponds of Serbs [comm. 1] ) is the German state agency for monitoring the activities of the Ponds of Serbs and their associations [1] , which has been in force since 1920 to 1945 [2] .

Located in Bautzen . According to the remaining instructions, the department was essentially designed to "encourage the dissolution of Vendians in Germanism." These instructions suggested that “every manifestation of the Vendian national identity be considered and exposed as hostile to the German state” [2] . In 1936, the "Vendian Department" turned to " Domovin " with a proposal to adopt a new charter, prepared by the Germans. After the refusal of the Luski Serbs to accept him, repression followed [3] .

Comments
  1. ↑ The term “Venda” in German was the official designation of the Serbian Puddle with a negatively dismissive tone. (“Vend is an uneducated and uncouth village man, burdened with negative character traits”). For this reason, after 1945, the Serbs in the GDR were officially called “Sorben”. See Schuster-Šewc, H.
