Educated at Oxford , Cartwright was elected a member of the Magdalene College and became a pastor. Having become interested in spinning and weaving when visiting Arkraight's factory, Cartwright invented a carding machine, steam treatment of fibrous substances and a steam machine in which instead of water vapor, alcohol was used.

April 4, 1785 Cartwright received a patent for a mechanical loom with a foot drive, which 40 times increased labor productivity. At the request of 50 manufacturers, Cartwright received a reward of £ 10,000 from Parliament for his inventions. Cartwright is also known as a poet and agronomist .
