Biography
He served initially in the Navy, but left the service in order not to participate in the war with the North American colonies. In 1780, he launched a campaign in defense of parliamentary reform, and then the ideas of the French Revolution, in a number of journal articles and brochures. Repeatedly persecuted, in 1813 he was sent to prison.
Received from the contemporaries the honorary name of “father of reform” Cartwright's journalistic works cover 52 volumes. Major works: "American independence, the glory and interest of Great Britain" ( 1774 ); “Take your Choice; Representation and respect - Imposition and contempt; Long parliaments and slavery - Annual parliaments and liberty "( 1777 ); “The Peoples Barrier against undue Influence and corruption” ( 1780 ); "The commonwealth in danger" ( 1795 ); “The constitutional Defense of England internal and external” ( 1796 ); "The state of the nation" ( 1809 ); Reasons for Reformation ( 1805 ).
