Stylization - in art, an intentional and emphasized imitation of the characteristic features of a style or historical era. Stylization is close to such concepts as imitation , epigonism , parody , tradition , influence , but differs significantly from them:
- tradition presupposes the progressive development of art, in which the work of geniuses influences the masters of the “second row” ( The Literary Encyclopedia cites the influence of Pushkin on Lermontov , Fet and Tyutchev on Blok as examples). Styling often involves a retrospective departure to the past;
- imitation subordinates the work of the epigon to the artistic method of another master, usually a contemporary or artist who worked in the recent past; however, similarity with the sample is not emphasized, but, on the contrary, is hidden. When styling, an obsolete, disappeared style is usually taken as a pattern;
- a parody exaggerates the imitated features of the original and gives them a comic interpretation, while stylization is a (open) fake for the original.
In the work of realist artists, stylistic features are formed in the process of implementing a great ideological and figurative content and in indirect connection with it. If the search for "style" for the artist is the main goal, then this will inevitably lead to stylization. [one]
The term is not used in cases of really large masters of art who demonstrate a deep mastery of the culture of other eras or social strata (for example, when describing Pushkin's fairy tales ).
Examples
In Russian literature, stylization techniques were vividly demonstrated by the masters of decadence : Kuzmin , Remizov , Vyach. Ivanov , Balmont .
