Vecht, Jacob van der

Jacob van der Vecht ( Dutch Jacobus van der Vecht , b. July 5, 1906 , The Hague - d. March 15, 1992 , Putten) - Dutch entomologist , hymenopterologist , professor, academician of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences . A major specialist in public and solitary wasps ( Vespidae ) and other stinging hymenopterans [1] .

Biography

Born July 5, 1906 in The Hague ( Netherlands ), where his father served as Master of Wine Cellars of Her Majesty ("keldermeester") at the court of Queen Emma's mother . His father was interested in natural history, and raised butterflies. He loved to walk with his children to observe nature. This interest turned into a passion for biology in only one of his sons. After a regular school, Jacob graduated with honors from a secondary gymnasium school ( Hogere Burgerschool , HBS) in The Hague, then studied at Leiden University [1] .

  • 1928 - graduated from Leiden University and began working in Indonesia (then the Dutch colony: Dutch East Indies ) at Instituut voor Plantenziekten at Buitenzorg (= Institute for Plant Diseases and Pests, Bogor , Java ).
  • 1933 - received a doctorate in science at Leiden University.
  • 1942-1945 - captured by Japanese invaders while working in Indonesia, imprisonment, survival in harsh conditions and separation from wife to different camps (she spent more than 3 years in prison camp, after which they had no children, and the only child died yet before the war) [1] .
  • 1947-1951 - Head of the Institute for Plant Diseases and Pests ( Bogor , Java, Indonesia ).
  • 1955-1964 - work as curator of Hymenoptera at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie , Leiden ( Netherlands )
  • 1962 - Professor ("extraordinaris") in zootaxonomy at the University of Groningen ( Groningen , Netherlands).
  • 1964 - Professor (“full”) at the University of Leiden (Leiden).
  • 1963 - elected as a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences).

Spouse Elizabeth M. (Bep) Bourguignon (died 1986), often helped her husband on expeditions [1] .

He died on March 15, 1992 in Putten ( Gelderland province, Netherlands ) [1] .

Major works

Recognized as one of the largest hymenopteran insect experts. He discovered and described many new types of insects for science. He made several expeditions, including to Argentina, Papua New Guinea, Suriname and other countries. A major specialist in public and solitary wasps ( Vespidae ) and other stinging hymenopterans. The author of more than 100 scientific publications [1] .
