At Money in the Bank, Dean Ambrose won the ladder match and won the gold case, successfully implementing it and becoming the WWE champion, defeating Seth Rollins, who, in turn, earlier defeated Roman Raines and also became the WWE champion. On the first Raw, after a paid show, there was a match between Roman and Seth for the opportunity to fight Dean on BattleGround. The battle ended in a draw and a tripartite match was subsequently assigned for the WWE championship in the BattleGround main event: champion Dean Ambrose against Seth Rollins against Roman Raines. On June 21, two days after Money in the Bank, WWE announced that Roman had violated the company's health policy and because of this he was suspended from speaking for 30 days. Despite the controversy of the situation, WWE left him in the match. June 27th on Raw, Seth Rollins ridiculed Roman’s removal. That same evening, John Cena and AJ Styles tried to get into the Main Event. Qualifying matches were assigned to them: John vs. Seth; AJ vs Dean. If John and AJ win, the match becomes five-sided. Ultimately, they were defeated and the match continued to be considered tripartite. On June 29, the WWE World Heavyweight Championship was officially renamed simply “WWE Title”. Also on July 11, Raw announced that at the last Raw before BattleGround, Dean Ambrose will defend the title from Seth Rollins, and then it will become clear who will qualify for the champion’s PPV.

At NXT TakeOver: Revolution 2014, Samy Zane defeated Neville and became the new NXT champion. In addition to the entire locker room, Kevin Owens, who was the best friend of the then champion, came out to congratulate him. Having embraced him, Kevin unexpectedly betrayed a companion, plotally injuring him. At the February NXT TakeOver: Rival 2015, a match was held between them for the NXT champion title, in which Kevin became the winner and new champion as a result of Sami “knockout”. At the May NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable, Zane played a rematch that ended without a result. Soon, Sami came down with an injury. Their confrontation erupted with renewed vigor at Royal Rumble 2016 when he made his debut and eliminated Kevin from the Battle Royale for the WWE championship. At WrestleMania 32, they both lost in a massive ladder match for the Intercontinental title, where Zak Ryder was the winner. At Extreme Rules, they held a four-sided match with Miz and Cesaro for the WWE IR title, but because of a fight between themselves, they again missed a chance to win. At Payback, Kevin scored a one-man victory over Samy. At Money in the Bank, they both lost in a ladder match for a golden case. On Raw, June 27th, Samy and Kevin agreed to host the final match between them at BattleGround.

At Money in the Bank, Natalya and Becky Lynch lost in a team match to WWE Women's Champion Charlotte and Dana Brook. After the match, the enraged Natalia betrayed her friend, going to the "dark side". On Raw, on June 20 and 27, the girls attacked each other in turn. Finally, on Raw on July 4, a match between them was announced at BattleGround.

At Money in the Bank, AJ Styles defeated John Cena after the intervention of Luke Halloween and Carl Anderson. On the next Raw, AJ, Carl, and Luke attacked John again. On Raw June 27, John and AJ tried to get into the BattleGround main event, but lost the qualifying matches necessary for that after interfering with each other. On Raw on July 4, the Club again tried to attack John, but Enzo Amore and Big Cass ran out to help him. Later that night, a 3-on-3 match was announced: John Cena, Enzo Amore, Big Cass vs. AJ Styles, Carl Anderson and Luke Halloween.

On SmackDown! On July 7, Zach Ryder defeated Seamus and challenged US champion Rusev for the title match. On Raw for July 11, Seamus demanded a rematch from Zack, won, and then left Ryder to be torn to pieces by the champion. Soon Rusev accepted the challenge of Zack and at BattleGround between them announced a match for the United States championship WWE.

At Raw on July 11, Darren Young won a massive match for the opportunity to fight Intercontinental champion Mies for the title. On the same day, their match was officially scheduled for BattleGround.

At Raw on July 11, WWE announced that Randy Orton would be returning to BattleGround. Randy will be guest of Chris Jericho's talk show "The Highlight Reel".

The Wyatt Family returned to Raw on June 20, confronting WWE Team Champions New Day. After two weeks of verbal skirmishes, Bray Wyatt invited the champions to his ranch. On Raw on July 11th, Wyatt Ranch visited New Day and the two teams began to fight outdoors. On July 12, Rene Young announced on Facebook that a 3-on-3 match will be held between the Wyatt Family and New Day on BattleGround.

On June 20, Sasha Banks also returned to Raw, starting a confrontation with the champion of Women Charlotte. After Sasha’s segments and matches against Charlotte’s ward, Dana Brooke, the champion on SmackDown announced on July 14 that she and Dana will play a match against Sasha and her partner, which she will have to find, at BattleGround.
