Biography

Born in Kumamoto Prefecture [1] . He studied at Taman High School, after which he entered the Imperial University of Tokyo [2] . While studying in high school, he was greatly impressed by the novel of the Japanese writer Mikami Ototiki “The Reviving Spring”, and from then on he developed an interest in gunpowder [1] . After graduating from the Faculty of Engineering of Tokyo Imperial University, he became an officer and technical specialist in the Japanese Navy.

In the Navy, in the research department of the powder arsenal, located in the city of Hiratsuka, he was engaged in missile development [3] . In 1934, he conducted an experimental launch of a solid fuel rocket on the seashore. Then he developed an apparatus for compression pressing of large-sized rocket propellants [4] . He was also involved in the development of gunpowder, used for the shells of the ship’s guns of the battleship Yamato [1] . He translated an American article published in 1940 in a German professional magazine about gunpowder and explosives, and distributed it among his colleagues in the Navy. Among other contents in the article was the phrase "... if the neutrons of the nucleus of the uranium-235 isotope collide, this can provoke the process of nuclear fission , which will lead to a huge release of energy ...". This article became the starting point of the growing interest of the naval command of Japan in the subject of the creation of a nuclear bomb. (for more details see the Japanese nuclear program ).

At the end of the war in 1945, Tsutomu got a job at the Japanese petrochemical company NOF corporation, which was located in Aichi Prefecture. In February 1954, he accepted an invitation from Tod Yasuakir (an engineer at Fuji Seimitsu , a former Nakajima company) to participate in a missile development project led by Itokawa Hideo . As a propellant for experimental rockets, Tsutomu provided Itokawa Hideo gunpowder for American grenade launchers , which remained in stock after the end of the Korean War [5] . The Itokawa experiment was ultimately implemented after the creation of miniature pencil missiles.

In 1967, Tsutomu became director of NOF corporation.
