Sussex Drive 24

Sussex Drive, 24 (originally called Gorffwysfa , now called Sussex 24 ( Eng. 24 Sussex )) - in this building on Sussex Drive in Ottawa is the official residence of the Prime Minister of Canada .

Built between 1866 and 1868 by Joseph Carrier ( born Joseph Merrill Currier ); became the residence of the Canadian Prime Minister in 1951. This is one of the two official residences, the second - Harrington Lake , located in the National Capital Region near Gatineau Park .

History

Sussex Drive, 24; 2010 year

The house was built by timber merchant and MP Joseph Carrier as a wedding present for his wife. It was called "Gorffwysfa" ( Gorffwysfa , in Welsh - "resting place"). It was sold in 1901, after the death of his wife Carrier, for $ 30,000 to William Edwards ( born William Cameron Edwards ). [one]

In 1943, the Government of Canada, exercised its right of expropriation, stripped Gordon Edwards, William’s nephew, of the ownership of the house due to the consolidation of state ownership of land along the Ottawa River. Edwards fought for the house, but lost a dispute with the government in 1946, when he died. After several years of uncertainty, in 1950 the Canadian government decided to restore the building and make it the residence for the prime minister. Repair work cost more than $ 500,000; Louis Saint-Laurent became the first prime minister to settle in the building in 1951. [one]

Since that time, all prime ministers, with the exception of the first woman, Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell (who lived in Harrington Lake ), were in this residence. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau , who took office in 2015, currently resides in Rideau Cottage , since Sussex 24 has been under renovation since January 2016 by decision of the National Metropolitan Commission .

The security of the residence was revised and strengthened after an attempted assassination of Canadian Prime Minister André Dallaire on Prime Minister Jean Chretien in November 1995. A few more guards were added to the security staff, video cameras and protective barriers were installed in front of the main gate. [2]

Unlike the English ( 10 Downing Street ) and American ( White House ) residences, Sussex 24 is used almost exclusively as a place of residence; The work of the Canadian Prime Minister is being conducted in the Prime Minister’s office and in the Langevin Block on Parliament Hill .
