Biography

Born March 12, 1910 in Sachkhere. Soon after birth, he moved to Tiflis and in 1926 entered the Tiflis Agricultural Institute, which he graduated in 1931. In 1932, he got a job at the All-Union Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking and worked until 1935. In 1935, the administration of the Tiflis Agricultural Institute invited him back as a researcher, where he worked until 1935. In 1936, the Agricultural Institute changed its name to Tbilisi, in connection with the change of the name of the capital of the Georgian SSR, at the same time from 1943 to 1945 he held the post of director of the Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking. From 1955 to 1972 he was an academician-secretary of the Department of Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR. In 1958 he moved to work at TbilSU, where he served as professor of the department of biochemistry. In the 1960s, he founded the Institute of Biochemistry and after its opening in 1971 he unanimously elected the director of this institute and worked in this position until his death.

He died in 1989.

Scientific activity

The main scientific works are devoted to the study of grape biochemistry and methods of its processing. The author of over 300 scientific works, 5 monographs and 6 inventions. He studied the metabolism of flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, hydrocarbons in plants. He developed the molecular basis for the detoxification of xenobiotics in plants.
