Sports career

In 1937 he made his debut with performances for the Vado club , in which he spent four seasons. During World War II, he played with the Kayrese , Savona and Genoa teams [3] .

In 1945 he moved to the Torino club , for which he played 4 seasons. Throughout all time he was the main goalkeeper of the team. During this time, four times won the title of champion of Italy . In the major league of the Italian championship held 137 matches [3] .

He made his debut in the national team on December 14, 1947. In the Bar, the Italians defeated the Czechoslovak team with a score of 3: 1. Until March 1949, he spent four more friendly matches in the national team. In total - four victories and a defeat from the England team . Lost eight goals, they were scored by Czech Jan Riga , Frenchman Jean Baratt , Portuguese Lawrence, Spaniard Agustin Gainsa and English strikers Tommy Lawton , Stan Mortensen and Tom Finney (2).

In the spring of 1949, the leadership of the Turin club accepted an invitation from the Portuguese Grand, Benfica , to take part in a friendly game in honor of one of the largest stars of the Lisbon club, Francisco Ferreira . The game took place on May 3, 1949 in Lisbon and ended with the defeat of the Italians with a score of 3: 4. The next day, the Torino team, club employees and journalists flew home on the Lisbon - Barcelona - Turin flight.

Near Savona, the aircraft began to decline due to difficult weather conditions. At about 5:03 p.m. - made a turn for approach and soon collided with the stone fence of the Superga Basilica on the top of the mountain of the same name, towering above the surroundings of Turin. As a result of the crash, all four crew members and 27 passengers died on the spot [4] .

At the time of the death of the main team of Torino, until the end of the season in Serie A there were four rounds left and the team led the championship race. In the last rounds, the honor of the club was defended by the players of the youth team. All rivals in these matches ( Genoa , Palermo , Sampdoria and Fiorentina ), out of respect for the fallen champions, also put youth teams on the field. The Torino youth team won all the last games of the season, thus gaining a posthumous league title for their comrades [4] .
