Biography
Rafael Carrera i Tursios was born on October 24, 1814 in a family of Indians.
According to the memoirs of contemporaries, he was distinguished by cruelty and lack of education; his retrograde rule was distinguished by religious fanaticism and unbridled militarism.
On April 17, 1839, Guatemala was proclaimed a sovereign state, thus completing the collapse of the United Provinces of Central America . After the separation of Guatemala, one province remained in the Federation - El Salvador [1] .
Having become unpopular, Carrera renounced the presidency and settled in Mexico , but in 1850 he was again elected president, and in 1854 this title was granted to him for life.
Carrera triumphantly repelled the attack of the allied forces of Honduras and El Salvador , with the aim of restoring the alliance of Central America ; in 1863 he even captured the capital of El Salvador.
Rafael Carrera i Tursios died on April 14, 1865 in Guatemala.
